8-Hr Sleep Must For Youths, Says, Dr Varshney In Bhopal
In an exclusive chat with Free Press, he discusses the impact of erratic work schedules, poor eating habits and excessive supplement use.

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Dr. Subodh Varshney, gastroenterologist and director of Siddhanta Super Specialty Hospital, sheds light on rising stomach-related issues among young professionals. In an exclusive chat with Free Press, he discusses the impact of erratic work schedules, poor eating habits and excessive supplement use.
How is the corporate work culture affecting young professionals’ health?
Night shifts and irregular work schedules have become a norm, but young professionals must understand that eight hours of sleep is essential. If they work at night, they must ensure they sleep during the day. Lack of rest leads to several stomach issues, including gastroenteritis. Fast food and fried meals only worsen the problem.
What is ‘stomach flu,’ and why is it so common now?
Stomach flu, or viral gastroenteritis, is caused by viruses like norovirus and rotavirus. It leads to diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach cramps. It spreads through contaminated food, water or contact with an infected person. The best prevention is frequent handwashing and maintaining hygiene.
Many people suffer from acidity. How can they manage it?
Acidity is a growing problem, and many rely on antacids instead of fixing their diet. People should eat smaller, frequent meals, avoid spicy and fatty foods and include more fruits and vegetables in their diet. Those with prolonged diabetes are more prone to acidity due to weakened intestinal function.
What is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and how can one prevent it?
GERD occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn and regurgitation. It usually happens after a heavy meal or lying down too soon after eating. Over time, GERD can damage oesophageal tissues. Eating smaller meals and staying upright after eating can help prevent it.
There’s a growing trend of excessive protein intake and gym workouts. Is it safe?
Overconsumption of protein supplements and excessive workouts can be harmful. Many processed protein powders contain additives that can damage the digestive system. People should focus on natural sources of protein and avoid extreme workout routines. Balance is key to maintaining good health.
