33-Year-Old Drug Addict Beaten To Death After Being Taken To Rehab Centre In MP's Gwalior; Family Accuses Staff Of Killing, Seeks Centre's Closure

Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A 33-year-old bank officer was allegedly beaten to death at a de-addiction centre in Gwalior under suspicious circumstances on Tuesday.

The victim, a drug addict who had recently escaped from a rehabilitation centre, was beaten to death after being taken back to the facility by its staff.

Further details about the incident have not yet been disclosed.

According to information, the victim, Pankaj Sharma, son of Ashok Sharma, was a field officer at the credit branch of Punjab National Bank and lived in Murar’s Tyagi Nagar area.

According to his family, Pankaj had been addicted to synthetic drugs for some time. When his condition worsened, they admitted him on July 25, 2025, to the Mini Golden Sanskar Nasha Mukti Kendra located on Shanichara Road in Maharajpura.

On Tuesday morning, Pankaj, along with 7–8 other inmates, escaped from the centre. He returned home healthy, but the family, worried about his addiction, informed the centre.

Staff from the centre then caught him near Badagaon Khurairi and took him back.

Pankaj’s uncle, K.D. Sharma, said the centre’s operators, Vishal Kankar and Harsh Shinde, later called the family, saying Pankaj’s health had worsened and they were taking him to JAH (Jaya Arogya Hospital) Trauma Centre.

When the family reached there, they found Pankaj lying dead on a stretcher. Doctors confirmed he had been brought dead.

The family alleged that Pankaj’s body had several serious injury marks and claimed he was beaten to death by the centre’s staff. They demanded that an FIR be registered against the operators and that the centre be shut down.

Maharajpura police station in-charge Dharmendra Yadav confirmed that the death appeared suspicious and that injury marks were visible on the body.

He said the matter is under investigation and further action will be taken after the post-mortem report.
