In the space of just ten days, American president Donald Trump has laid bare the depth of his ignorance and the height of his arrogance. His dramatic announcement of sweeping tariffs, imposed not just on foes but on long-standing allies, was not a strategic move but a reckless stunt, driven by impulse and devoid of foresight.
That he capitulated within a week, deferring the implementation for 90 days, only confirms the obvious: Trump never had a plan to begin with. This abrupt U-turn did not spring from sudden enlightenment. It was the result of widespread outrage.
Tens of thousands of Americans took to the streets across all 50 states, their protests reflecting the deepening anxiety over a president whose decisions are as erratic as his tweets. The financial markets responded with alarm. In days, trillions of dollars were wiped off the value of American companies, with losses exceeding the GDP of entire nations, including India. The once-mighty dollar suffered, too, as global confidence eroded and countries began exploring alternatives to a dollar-dominated trade regime.
In his reckless bid to appear tough on trade, Trump has unsettled the very foundations of the global economic order. The uncertainty he unleashed has created chaos where there was once predictability. Even though he has now paused the onslaught, the damage has been done. Rebuilding trust, both within the US and globally, will take far longer than 90 days.
True, China has often flouted international norms, producing more than it consumes and exploiting loopholes. But slapping a 124 per cent tariff, the highest ever, on Chinese goods is not diplomacy; it’s self-sabotage. Trump’s instinct is to isolate, not collaborate. He imagines presidential orders are solutions in themselves. But the real world is far more complex, and even his own allies, like Elon Musk, now face the consequences of this simplistic worldview. Tesla, for instance, depends on materials available only from China.
Trump’s slogan of “Make America Great Again” rings hollow. With no coherent policy and no economic insight, he has reduced himself to a loudmouth whose bluster masks a disturbing lack of depth. Even Republican lawmakers have begun to edge away, realising the political cost of clinging to a president who is fast becoming a liability.
As prices rise and economic pain spreads, even Trump’s base, the much-vaunted Bible Belt, may come to see that he is no Moses. His journey leads not to a Promised Land but to economic wilderness. Trump’s protectionist wall will not keep the world out, it will shut America in. One is reminded of Bob Minor’s prophetic cartoon from 1925, where China, India and Africa stood tall, and America looked Lilliputian. A century later, thanks to Trump, that caricature has become reality.
